FNO Highlight of the Day: Backstage at the September 7 Fashion Show with Makeup Artist Pat McGrath and Hairstylist Guido Palau

“I’m kind of daunted, actually,” says Guido Palau. The hairstyling czar is talking about the official kickoff for Fashion’s Night Out: a larger-than-life fashion show—the biggest ever staged in New York City—to be held outside at Lincoln Center on the evening of September 7. Along with Pat McGrath and Vogue Contributing Editors Edward Enninful and Tabitha Simmons, Palau will ready 200 models (including Caroline Trentini, Angela Lindvall, andKarolina Kurkova) for the runway, in clothes from the best fall collections. “It’s going to be about speed and turnover,” says a cheerful McGrath, who will bring a team of 90 to 100 assistants in order to accomplish the epic backstage job at hand. “We’re both great preplanners,” says Palau—who, along with McGrath, has given us an exclusive preview of the show’s beauty looks (below), which he describes as “the September issue come to life.” McGrath will play with everything from “glitter for eyes and a dark lip” to “the colored eyebrow [from Balenciaga’s fall show].” Asked about his favorite look so far, a predictably droll Palau answers, “The one I can do the easiest—the one with the hat!”
